Pushing Party Aside

Let’s learn how to disagree and still talk to each other. Over and over again we hear people express the same taboo: we mustn’t talk about politics. They say if we talk about politics we’ll get into an awful argument and we won’t be friends anymore.

The sad thing is they are probably right, but social life was not always this way. What has happened? Is it extreme partisanship that has come to separate us? Are political parties just another belief system we’ve learned to cling to? Do we always support our Party, right or wrong?

I’ll bet if we put party aside and just talked with each other about the things that bother us, the men and women who represent us, the troublesome issues like education and health care we face; if we just share our experiences with each other, we will discover that we have a lot in common.

We need to be able to discuss and work through these issues without the help of any party line. If we can’t learn to talk to one another and listen to one another it will be awfully hard to make the changes that need to be made in this country. Let’s agree to disagree and work together to make America great.
